Twenty-three years, most of them operational
I've spent 23+ years in senior technology roles — including eleven years leading technology across multiple agencies within a publicly listed group, and the technology side of a successful SaaS platform exit. That's not just a career summary; it's why Calm Ventures builds software the way it does.
Leading technology inside operating businesses teaches you something agencies rarely learn: software is only good if the Monday-morning workflow actually improves. I've been the person accountable when systems slowed a business down — which is why the software I build starts from how your operation runs, not from a feature list.
Why "operators, not just developers"
Calm Ventures isn't my first company. I also run HelpFully IT, an IT support business founded in 2019, serving companies across Kent, London, and beyond. Between the two, I see both sides of business technology daily: the systems businesses buy, and the gaps those systems leave. Calm Ventures exists to close those gaps with software built to fit.
We also build and run our own products — CalmRota for staff scheduling, EndorseHQ for testimonials, and CalmStaff for HR. Running production software with real users keeps us honest: we live with our own architectural decisions, uptime, and support queue, the same way you'll live with yours.
Deliberately small
Calm Ventures is small on purpose. No account managers, no pitch teams, no junior developers learning on your project. When you call, you get the person with two decades of experience who is actually writing the code. Decisions happen in the conversation, not three meetings later.
The same principle applies to how I communicate: plain English, not jargon. Jargon is a way of hiding, and there's nothing here to hide — if a technical choice matters to your project, I'll explain it in terms of what it costs and what it gets you.
Standards we hold ourselves to
- Cyber Essentials certified — the same security standard we'd recommend to any client, applied to our own business. Verify it on the official registry.
- Fixed quotes — a written specification and a fixed price before any build work begins.
- You own everything — code, database, and data. No lock-in, ever.
- Honest recommendations — if a £30/month off-the-shelf tool fits your need, I'll tell you to buy it.
Where we are
Based in Kent, near Gravesend — about forty minutes from central London. Most work runs remotely with calls where useful; on-site kick-offs and workshops around London and the South East are a train ride away.
